Time Saving Manure Management Ideas: Working Smarter - Not Harder.

We used to spend a lot of time with wheel barrows picking up horse manure..... but with so many horses at our centre it became impractical and a heavy burden on our time that could be spent better helping more unwanted horses.
So, we switched to harrowing.
And it was the best decision we ever made!
What used to take many hours now takes 2 x 20 minutes sessions per week and our paddocks and horses are so much healthier for it too.
Plus it doesn’t need to be expensive as our Harrow only cost $20! And most horses can be trained to even pull your Harrow for you if you’re short of a quad.
Whilst in the past we’ve spent several thousand dollars on pre made harrows over the years, only to watch them constantly fall apart, we have also used old metal bed frames at virtually no costs to equally as good results. These can be found at Op Shops and picked up for cheap money.
And they work very well too.
We are aware that some people believe worms are spread by harrowing but after using this approach for the last 14 years, we have never found that to be the case. As we have not had a single worm burden on any of the hundreds of horses that have come through our centre in nearly a decade and an half, apart from new horses who have arrived with worms.
So coupled with a regular worming schedule using the right moxedectin wormers, we can highly recommend harrowing.
And we’ve never found a need to rest paddocks as we have an affective worming plan in place, so have not seen any risk of spreading them.
We highly recommend to be Liming your paddocks at least once per year to negate the affects of spreading nitrogen rich horse poo all over them, as well as to help with acid soils for other benefits.
So, if you want to spend more quality time with your horse and work smarter and not harder, instead of the back breaking work of picking up horse poo, we can highly recommend using a home made Harrow
