Horse Breathing: Nature’s Remarkable Adaptation
The remarkable turbinates hidden inside your horse's nose.

💨Did you know your horse has an incredible built-in climate control system hidden inside their nose?

👃 Deep inside your horse’s nose are amazing little structures called turbinates. They’re incredibly thin, curled bones covered in moist tissue and an exceptionally rich network of tiny blood vessels. Their curled shape creates an enormous surface area inside the nose.

❤️ When your horse takes a breath, the air doesn’t simply rush straight into the lungs. Instead, it first has to weave its way around these incredible little structures, where it’s warmed and humidified before continuing its journey to the lungs.

🤯 But here’s the part that fascinated me even more…

💨 When your horse breathes out, that warm, moist air passes back over those same turbinates. Instead of simply losing all that precious warmth and moisture to the winter air, much of it is reclaimed and used to help warm and humidify the very next breath.

❤️ How amazing is that!

🌍 Horses are full of hidden gems of evolution. Every remarkable adaptation tells another part of the story of how they’ve become the incredible animals we know today. ❤️🐴
