I heard this saying a lot when I was a young girl hanging out at my auntie's barn, and I never really understood it until I started feeding horses as an adult myself.
It conveys a powerful truth that no amount of grooming can make a horse shine with health like a natural diet can. So, it’s way more important what you put in your horse's bucket than it is on what is being applied to their coat.
I always try to advise all of my clients not to waste their money on fancy shampoos, hoof oils, and the wide array of potions and lotions for the outside of their horses.
